I’ve noticed the transmission seemed to be having shift issues when upshifting from 4th to 5th - hesitating and dropping out of 5th a couple times during normal acceleration until finally shifting up. Seemed odd. Then, driving home from work about a week ago and my transmission puts itself into limp mode. Using a generic scanner I pull up “5th gear ratio incorrect” or some such thing; clear codes, drive it another 400 miles with no recurring transmission idiot light. Yesterday I had my local mechanic of choice check the transmission out and he stated it was throwing code 049 (gear monitoring or some such thing). He stated when the transmission begins to slip from wear, it’ll throw this code and it usually means a new transmission is in short order. A remanufactured transmission is at least $2,000, and installation is probably around $800 I would think, so at the moment I’m going to get a quote from Carmax and see if it’s worth my time to sell this now and get something else, or if I should just drive it into the ground and replace it later.

Our family’s 530i pretty much did the same thing. We ended up selling it off and never replaced the transmission. Still drove fine for the most part but limp mode got more and more frequent.

I’ve managed to locate a low mileage used transmission for it, but I’m hesitant about used vs. reman’d. It’s about $1,000 difference in price, but that might be worth my peace of mind.

$3k gets you a long way toward a decent manual E46 to replace this one. My ‘03 was about $6k almost two years ago, it’s been great. I sold my ‘01 for $3,500 at the time and it wasn’t in bad shape either.

A long way for sure, but there’s $2,000 in parts plus the cost of the transmission and coding. I was looking at around the same price of professionally replacing my transmission vs. swapping in a manual myself. That’s not something I would want to attempt unless this were a fun car, but unfortunately it’s my DD for the time being.

I think it is. Sadly, a lot of the used ones will pretty quickly suffer the same fate as yours.

GM or ZF trans? Either way it’s probably expensive.

I guess I was pushing for a whole new E46 with a manual, rather than fixing this one. See what Carmax says, that’s not a bad idea. You never know. Or go get a new Golf Sportwagen, I hear they’re giving those away these days.
